No Degree, No Formal Training… How Did I Make It in Marketing?
The hidden ingredient for marketing success
I remember it clear as day.
Sat across from me in the pub was my boss of six years who had, two years previous, made me a director of the company. The sales and marketing director, to be exact.
We were discussing education when he asked me something that cut the space between us with a knife.
“I don’t think I’ve ever asked what you studied at university, Mark. What was it?”
Now, there are a couple of issues here. Firstly, the guy who originally interviewed you should have a pretty solid grasp of your education.
Secondly, I didn’t go to university. Ever. I left school after my A-Levels and went to work for a company that looked after cashed cheques (after a bout of pot washing in a local pub kitchen).
“I didn’t go to university,” I said, nervously swilling the pint in front of me.
His response? “Oh. Oh dear.”
Don’t worry, I kept the job.
Fast-forward 15 years, and I’m running my own marketing business and YouTube brand which, combined, generate a six-figure annual turnover.
