I’ve just got back from Brooklyn, and apart from feeling fatter, jet-lagged, and desperately in need of some vegetables, I feel rather fortunate to have a brand-new phone in my pocket.

This happens a lot. It’s part of my job. But some phones feel more special than others when you’re fortunate enough to get them before they hit the shelves.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 falls into that bracket. It’s thinner, wider, and more powerful than the device it replaces. It also has an S25 Ultra-matching camera system (nearly — I’ll get to that later), and is one of the first devices on the market to be running One UI 8 and Android 16.

It’s one of the most anticipated foldables of the year, because it’s the granddaddy of them all. Samsung started the foldable phone thing in 2019, yet, ironically, has been one of the slowest to evolve the design. Until now, the Z Fold series has been thicker and narrower (when closed) than the rest, with a camera system that doesn’t quite justify the price tag.

Has that changed with the Z Fold7? On the face of it, yes, it has — big time. And I’ve been using it for a week to find out if there’s any substance behind the hype.
